Thread Cutting for Beginners (Video)

Volkel Threading Solutions presents a How to Video on threading with hand taps. Using a Taper Tap (Form A – long lead) and clamping it in an adjustable tap wrench, they demonstrate how to tap into a metal block by applying a suitable cutting oil onto the tap. The video emphasizes the importance of aligning the tap vertically to the core hole and making slow, controlled 180-degree turns to avoid misalignment and ensure clean threads. After turning the tap to the desired depth, they reverse the direction to back the tap out of the hole safely, clearing debris in the process.

Once the initial thread is cut, they switch to a Plug Tap (Lead – Form D), easily identified by the two rings on the shaft, to deepen and refine the thread. For blind holes, the video highlights the use of a Bottoming Tap, also known as a finishing tap, which is designed to cut threads all the way to the bottom. By following these simple steps, the video provides an accessible guide for beginners to achieve clean, precise, and accurate threads. This tutorial showcases how essential tools and proper technique can make the threading process smooth and efficient, even for those new to the skill.
